Mid Sussex Division One – MVFC 2s 5 - 1 Lindfield
We reach the half way point of the season with today’s game, going into it with a record of 4 wins and 4 defeats. New training kit, new formation, new footballs but same old bang average players turned up to see off the storm and watch the sun break through the clouds for the only game in the league to not be postponed.
Branchy and his 9,000 steps and accelerated heart rate were probably not needed as MVFC 2s comfortably took all 3 points home with a 5-1 win to setup a stress free evening and a socially distanced curryless-curry for some of the team. Villa took the lead after Aaron Blackwell, who definitely shouldn’t be taking free kicks, expertly curled a free kick over the wall and into the corner from 25 yards. The lead was further extended after confusion in the Lindfield defence, saw Jordan pounce on the loose ball to finish past the oncoming keeper. 2 minutes later, the defence got distracted, probably by a seagull or the hockey match on the adjoining (look it up Trish) pitch to see Lindfield pull one back.
On the half hour mark, the best move of the game saw Jaymo pick up out Trev who combined with Studsy down the right hand side, to end up with Studsy crossing for Jordan to head home and put Villa 3-1 up. Studsy (#HowMayIAssistYou) then won the ball back and instead of shooting, unselfishly played in Trev who celebrated his birthday by scoring his first goal since World War 2. Trev wasn’t done there though, after substitute Walton played him through in the second half and he rounded the keeper to make it 5-1 and get his first brace since World War 1. Villa climb to 2nd in the table albeit with the huge caveat of playing 20 more games than anyone else.
Apparently, if the season does not resume due to COVID, the league will be settled by the average points per game, multiplied by the average age of the squad, the number of balls lost, the duration it took to get training tops and divided by the combined IQ of the defenders within the squad. Meaning …. We are the champions! Enjoy lockdown everyone. Stay safe, stay happy.
